Role of a structural engineer

A structural engineer will work with the project manager, architect, fire, mechanical and hydraulic engineers to make sure designs accommodate other services and comply with building code and Australian Standards. This guarantees that your build will be function, suitable and structurally sound and that you receive structural engineer certificates for the premises.

Our structural engineers are always up to date with the Australian Standards codes and always aware of the latest trends and which materials are best for the relevant job.

As industry leaders, our structural engineers can assess a build or building site and then directly apply solutions to any potential problems. We are thorough and are dedicated to creating structures that are future-proof and stand the test of time.

A structural engineer has to be accurate, even down to the structure of the concrete slab and foundations. Every detail is calculated from the bolts to the thickness of a concrete slab. These details to you and I may seem minute but it is such precision that ensures the structure stands firm and is future proof.

Inhouse Consulting Engineers has been operating for over 30 years, providing structural engineering for houses Sydney based since 1986. As experts in the industry, we understand the importance of the relationship between home owner and structural engineer. Whether you are designing the new build of your dreams or just need to solve the cause of the cracking in your structure, we offer a transparent and friendly relationship so you have complete control, awareness and understanding of what is going on with your project.

How we work

Once you have had your architect draw or indicate how your structure will physically look, the job of a structural engineer is to make sure the structure is adequate and meets any safety requirements and building codes.

Our structural engineer will factor in conditions like the weather and site conditions, along with other load requirements, to guarantee your structure will be sturdy and stand firm, minimising risks of cracking or moving.

We communicate with architects and stormwater engineers so the structural engineers footings design is calculated to ensure stormwater drains are suitable to council infrastructure and not affect your building.

After considering these factors, our structural engineer will then detail, draft and create designs indicating the correct measurement of your buildings structure. For example, they will determine the right thickness of concrete and steel reinforcement and the correct size of posts and structure of the beams for the framing of the foundations. They are capable of fine tuning the slightest detail from the design of a bolt or a weld to ensure all the structural elements for harmonious and the structure will match your needs and requirements.

Our team at Inhouse Consulting Engineers are always available to go through our drawings and reports in detail with you so you are aware of everything that is happening.

Our proudest work usually ends up buried beneath the ground, brick-clad or covered in concrete but we don’t mind. The best and most successful designs are the one which stay hidden for years to come. They remain in place until the structure itself is removed, upgraded and transformed into something even better.
